A 1974 study conducted by the Swiss Meteorological Institute discovered that a dry wind that passes through parts of Switzerland, Italy, the Middle East, and southern France was causing many physical and emotional issues including depression, headaches and heart attacks. They found that the wind contained a high concentration of positive ions while air quality in other areas such as mountainous regions or even the air after a spring rain contained a high concentration of negative ions. After much research they found that all living organisms responded positively to the negatively charged ions but poorly to the positive charged ions. With exposure to the negatively charged ions, plants were healthier, laboratory animals were calmer and humans were more relaxed and alert.

Based off of these studies, the ionic breeze air purifier was designed to produce negative ions to negate the affects of pollen, dirt, and pollutants. As particles with one or more extra electrons, these negative ions are emitted from the ionic air purifier continuously. The negative ions are sent through the air and will collide with airborne molecules, giving up its negative charge to the molecule. Each new negative molecule created will be attracted to the positive molecules around it and will accumulate until the particle becomes heavy enough to fall to the floor. Although some ionizers simply cause the particles to fall to the floor, there are many ionizers that have a special electrostatic precipitator which will draw the dirty particles back into the purifier to trap on a charged metal plate.

Ionic air breeze purifiers are a popular addition to households because they do not require replacement filters as do other purifying systems and they are relatively quiet and use little energy in order to run. It is important that the metal plate within a purifier and the area around the purifier is cleaned periodically as it is possible for the dirt particles to be returned back into the air.
